Sipapu 2012

Pond skimming contestant flipping out of pond.
The pond skimming contest at Sipapu was very fun. Here one of the contestants is doing a flip as he reaches the back of the pond.

Even though I have been very busy lately, I made some time hit the slopes for one last run before the season ended. I wish there was some place even closer, but Sipapu is definitely worth the trip. We managed to make it out there a little earlier than last year and the conditions were pretty good for the most part.

At times it was a little warm and I wish I was a better boarder so I could have went without my jacket, but all is good. The conditions held up pretty good while we were there. The biggest hazard was getting on the lift. The snow would melt and there would be huge puddles of water. At times it was like wakeboarding to get on the lift. Overall though this was a minor inconvenience for the amount of fun we were having on the slopes.

The first day we were there they pretty much had all the trails open. After that they started closing down trails depending on the conditions. I believe they only ended up closing 3-5 trails the whole time we were there.

On our second to last day there we took a break from snowboarding and watched the annual pond skimming. They made a 94 foot pond at the bottom of the slopes and had a contest. Each contestant would try to skim across the pond and make it all the way across. They would then be judged on their effort and get bonus points for any tricks they did after they made it across. The contest had both skiers and snowboarders. It appeared that snowboarders had an easier time since they didn’t have to worry about keeping both feet perfect. Some of the wipeouts were hilarious. I imagine that will be what we look like next year!

Sipapu was awesome as always. It sucks that it is already the end of snowboarding season. We definitely didn’t make enough trips. Hopefully we will be a little better prepared next year and will actually make at least 3-4 trips! Too bad I didn’t win the lottery the other night or I could find places to snowboard year round!

I was originally born in Missouri, but traveled around most of my childhood. My mom finally got tired of moving while we were in Dallas, Texas and I have been here ever since. After high school I started college at the University of North Texas (UNT) and started working in the computer field. I currently work for JCPenney as a front end software engineer for their e-commerce website. Before this I worked for AT&T about 12 years and started with them in 1999 (when they were Southwestern Bell). I have many passions and I really love photography. Besides photography I also love sports. I not only like to watch it, but I also love to play. Currently my friends and I play indoor soccer and flag football.
